About Kings of Leon

Kings of Leon emerged as a Southern rock powerhouse in the early 2000s, blending raw alt-rock energy with the soulful grit of their Nashville roots. Formed in 1999, the band consists of brothers Caleb, Nathan, and Jared Followill, along with their cousin Matthew Followill. The unique family dynamic translates into a palpable chemistry on stage and in the studio, making them one of the most compelling bands in modern rock. The group’s early albums, such as “Youth and Young Manhood” and “Aha Shake Heartbreak”, were lauded for their edgy mix of garage rock anthems and Southern-fried blues. However, it was their 2008 album, “Only by the Night”, that catapulted them to international superstardom, with mega-hits like “Sex on Fire” and “Use Somebody” dominating the charts. Kings of Leon’s music has evolved over the years, but their commitment to honest, evocative songwriting remains unwavering. Their 2013 single “Mustang” showcases their ability to blend catchy hooks with deeper lyrical themes, proving their versatility and enduring appeal in the ever-changing landscape of rock music.

Fans of Kings of Leon appreciate their authenticity and the way they seamlessly incorporate influences ranging from Southern rock to post-punk revival, all while maintaining a sound that is distinctly their own. With each album, they continue to redefine what it means to be a rock band in the 21st century.

Meaning of Mustang by Kings of Leon

The song “Mustang” by Kings of Leon explores themes of freedom, identity, self-discovery, and inner conflict. The lyrics depict a sense of restlessness and a longing for something more, as well as the struggle to understand oneself and others.

In the first verse, there is a call to spontaneity and adventure, with the suggestion to break away from routine and explore something new. The mention of love being all around and questioning whether it’s the smell of fall or a city burned could represent the contrast between beauty and destruction within surroundings.

The chorus, with the reference to a mustang and a kitty, may symbolize conflicting aspects of one’s nature – the wild, untamed spirit represented by the mustang, and the more domesticated, subdued side portrayed as the kitty. This juxtaposition could reflect the internal struggle between embracing freedom and conforming to societal norms.

The second verse introduces elements of physical strength and masculinity, with imagery of a golden globe and muscle magazine hinting at desires for power and dominance. The rising heat of the water could symbolize inner passion or intensity building up.

The third verse takes a darker turn, portraying a sense of apathy and detachment towards others’ suffering and a focus on superficial appearances, such as watching someone eat in front of a camera. The misty morning in the eyes could suggest a clouded or unclear emotional state.

The recurring chorus echoes the question of identity and purpose, with the mustang representing a desire for autonomy and the kitty symbolizing a more compliant or restrained nature. The lines about mistakes and pity convey a sense of regret or dissatisfaction with one’s choices and their impact on others.

In the bridge, the mention of something amiss in an apology hints at unresolved conflicts or tensions in relationships, adding a layer of emotional complexity to the narrative.

Overall, “Mustang” by Kings of Leon presents a multi-dimensional exploration of personal struggles, societal expectations, and the search for meaning and authenticity in a world that can feel both liberating and suffocating.

Lyrics of Mustang by Kings of Leon

Verse 1
If you're free tomorrow, don't make any plans (Don't make any plans)
We can go to Sylvan Park and kick over trash cans
Love is all around me, everywhere I turn
Is that the smell of fall or the city burned?

Chorus
There's a mustang in the city
And it's calling me out
Are you a mustang or a kitty?
What are you all about?

Verse 2
There's a golden globe in my office space
A muscle magazine next to the toilet
I'm getting big and strong just thinking about it (Uh-uh)
And I can feel the heat of the water rise, oh

Chorus
There's a mustang in the city
And it's calling me out
Are you a mustang or a kitty?
What are you all about?

Verse 3
I saw 'em operating on a kid downstairs
I could not be bothered to pretend to care
I like to watch you eat in front of the camera
And there's a misty mornin' in your eyes, oh

Chorus
There's a mustang in the city
And it's calling me out
Are you a mustang or a kitty?
What are you all about?
It's just a mistake and a pity
It's drownin' the crowd
Are you a mustang or a kitty?
A mustang or a kitty?

Bridge
There was somethin' amiss in your apology, oh

Chorus
There's a mustang in the city
And it's calling me out
Are you a mustang or a kitty?
What are you all about?
It's a mistake and a pity
Draggin' me down
Are you a mustang or a kitty?
A mustang or a kitty?

are you serious?
you don’t sound sure
the lyrics are extremely vague
and dont land
what is a golden globe about?
February film awards
muscle magazine… etc.
is a very clear piece of masculin imagery
mustang? car?pony? or the guy in the band that lives down the block
or the woman model in all the magazines
kitty? is that polite for pussy cat?
overall so vague and nothing to connect with
find no engaging narrative quality
it’s a nice sounding song
like the music energy and vocals
