Deftones
Deftones have long been the darlings of the alternative metal scene, carving out a niche that blends the brutal with the beautiful. Formed in Sacramento, California, in 1988, the band’s lineup solidified as Chino Moreno on vocals, Stephen Carpenter on guitar, Abe Cunningham on drums, Frank Delgado on turntables and keyboards, and Sergio Vega on bass following the tragic loss of their original bassist Chi Cheng.
Emerging during the Nu-metal explosion of the late ’90s, Deftones stood apart with their willingness to experiment beyond the genre’s limited boundaries. Their breakthrough album, Around the Fur (1997), set the stage with hits like “My Own Summer (Shove It)” and showcased Moreno’s dynamic vocal range, shifting effortlessly from melodic whispers to agonized screams.
Post-Around the Fur, the band’s magnum opus, White Pony (2000), saw them depart further from their Nu-metal peers, engaging in sonic explorations that leaned heavy on atmosphere and introspection. This growth was exemplified in songs like “Change (In the House of Flies),” which remains a cornerstone of their live performances.
Elite, a track from White Pony, epitomizes the band’s ability to juxtapose raw aggression with meticulously crafted soundscapes. Moreno’s guttural vocals over Carpenter’s crushing riffs create an aural assault, yet it’s Delgado’s atmospheric touches that make the cacophony hauntingly beautiful. The song later earned Deftones a Grammy for Best Metal Performance, a testament to their prowess in blending ferocity with finesse.
Through the years, albums such as Deftones (2003), Diamond Eyes (2010), and Gore (2016) have shown a band unafraid to evolve, constantly pushing the envelope while staying true to their core. Their influence on contemporary heavy music is palpable, with bands from diverse genres citing Deftones as a key inspiration.
In a world driven by trends and commercialism, Deftones remain an embodiment of artistic integrity, proving that genuine evolution and experimentation are as cathartic as the rawest scream or the heaviest riff. Their discography is a testament to a band that has found harmony in chaos, making them not just a band, but a sonic force to be reckoned with.
